LAWHORN PUSHES REDHAWKS PAST RAILCATS IN EXTRAS, 5-3
F-M Winning Streak Stands At Four
Fargo, N.D. — The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks received more late-game heroics from Darryl Lawhorn to record a 5-3 victory over the Gary SouthShore Railcats in extra innings Thursday night at U.S. Steel Yard. Lawhorn provided an RBI-triple in the top of the tenth to score the winning run of the contest.

The RedHawks put the first run of the game on the board with a single score in the top of the fifth. With runners on the corners and two outs in the inning, Tydus Meadows doubled down the left field line to plate Lawhorn from third.

Gary came back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to bring the contest back to a tie as Eric McNamee supplied a single to score Nate Price from third. The Railcats would later load the bases with one out in the frame, but F-M starter Mike Peschel worked his magic to record the final two outs without giving up a run.

The Railcats took their only lead of the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jermaine Allensworth knocked in the first score with a sacrifice fly to score Dave Detienne. Steve Haake crossed the plate for the second run of the inning on a passed ball.

F-M battled back quickly, however, with two runs in the next half inning of play. After leading off the frame with a triple, Joe Mathis scored on a single by Kory Wayment. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Juan Melo drew a walk to allow Wayment to score from third.

After Adam Shorsher walked to lead off the top of tenth, Lawhorn delivered his second triple of the year with a drive down the right field line. Lawhorn scored in the next at-bat as Mike Just recorded his second hit of the night on a single to right-center.

Peschel worked six innings for the RedHawks while giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. Adam Rowe gained his fourth win of the season out of the F-M bullpen with a scoreless 1.2 innings of work. Nate Cotton recorded his seventh save of the season after shutting the Railcats down in the bottom half of the tenth inning.

Lawhorn learning trade at third
By Chuck Carree/Staff Writer/Star news Online
Darryl Lawhorn knows first-hand the hazards of playing the hot corner in minor league baseball.
A former New Hanover High School star and third baseman for the Stockton Ports of the Class A California League, he was charged with an error after taking a high hopper off his chest last Wednesday.
The week before he took a hard smash off his chest that almost knocked him out of the game.
"It caught me right off the cuff of the grass,'' he said. "After I threw him out, I ran to the dugout and dropped like a sack of rocks. Whew. I just had to catch my breathe a little bit.''
In three seasons at East Carolina, Lawhorn played a number of positions, but mostly outfield. For the past two seasons, he was a second baseman in the independent Northern League.
"I have to play more aggressive at third base than I normally would anywhere else,'' he said. "Sometimes it works out and sometimes it gets me into trouble.''
While learning the hot corner is a work in progress, so is his hitting.
He insists his .183 average in 93 at-bats is misleading, saying he has made solid contact on most of his outs.
"It seems like people are making diving or outstanding plays,'' he said. "I'm not frustrated with the average. I know it is low. I'm taking my walks and not striking out as much.''
He has eight walks in his past 10 games and three strikeouts in his past six.
"Normally if my average was that low I'd be flipping out and wanting to quit because I am doing poorly,'' he continued. "You have to take it with a grain of salt. If you let it bother you, then you are not going to last very long in this game.''

Ports rally past Oaks for wild win
September 3, 2007 - Darryl Lawhorn ripped a walk-off single in the 10th inning to give Stockton a 6-5 victory over Visalia on Sunday.
Trailing, 5-4, heading into the bottom of the 10th, Steve Kleen ripped a one-out double, Frank Martinez tripled to tie the game and scored the winning run on Lawhorn's base hit. With Ports fans on their feet, Darryl Lawhorn calmly stepped to the plate and singled to right field. That set off a frenzied celebration among the Ports as Martinez crossed home plate."The other guys did a great job getting on base," Lawhorn said. "Frankie's triple gave me a chance to finish the game in walk-off style. (Not having a comeback win) makes it that much sweeter."
